You're having an uneventful dinner in mid December. Over the noise of the evening news, a silver present under the tree begins to make an odd noise. It sounds like... chirping.

'Oh man,' you wonder, 'tell me it's not a pet bird. I totally wanted a puppy this year...'

You start to open the box, when suddenly a backdraft of fire bursts from within! Backing away instinctively, you watch in shock as the fire coalesces into the shape of a small, glowing bird.

But this is no ordinary bird. This, my friend, is a phoenix.

According to an overwhelming vote on Equestria Daily [link] the best pet to receive as a present would be a phoenix.

OF COURSE IT IS! I've yet to hear a tale of a phoenix that has not been the ideal companion in every way.
